T4YP Lab: Theatre For Two?!

T4YP Lab 2010

A first of its kind in Malaysia theatre event, Shake-your-own-speare at klpac is set to invite the audience to have a say in and be a part of what they watch from the 15th to the 18th of September.

As part of T4YP Lab, Shake-your-own-speare is an intimate theatre experience where only one actor performs for an audience of two at any one time. These small houses of two will have the chance to rewrite Shakespeare’s classic tragedies like Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet. Audiences can also expect to enjoy and immerse themselves in their favourite social networking site and even answer a phone call that could very well change the life of another.

Shake-your-own-speare is directed by T4YP alumni member, Tung Jit Yang. The production will also be overseen by klpac’s director-in-residence, Kelvin Wong who directed Mukabuku for last year’s T4YP Lab. Mukabuku is soon to open in Singapore as part of the inaugural CausewayExchange Festival.

To accommodate the show, three separate performing areas have been set up for each of these performances that will last 10 minutes. Upon experiencing the performance in one space, audience members will be ushered to the next; in total, an audience of 6 (2 in each space) will experience 3 different interactive performances in a span of 30 minutes at any single session.

Tung Jit Yang remarks, “The idea of sharing the theatre space with the audience has always fascinated me. Shake-your-own-speare, is the product of this fascination and also an attempt to challenge the traditional notion of ‘you are actor; I am audience’ however, never losing sight to entertain.”
